The ethanol produced in Brazil from sugar cane, also has positive projections for the coming years, due mainly to the growth in domestic consumption. The projected production for 2019 of 58.8 billion liters, more than double that recorded in 2008. Domestic consumption is projected at 50 billion liters and exports at 8.8 billion.
The national policy for the production of cane sugar is oriented on sustainable expansion of culture, based on economic, environmental and social. The program Agro-Ecological Zoning of Sugarcane Sugar (ZAEcana) regulates the planting of sugarcane, taking into consideration the environment and the region's economic fitness. From a detailed study, are stipulated areas conducive to planting based on the types of climate, soil, biomass and irrigation needs.
It is planned, although a timetable for gradual reduction until 2017, the burning of sugar cane in areas where harvesting is mechanized, prohibiting the planting in the Amazon, the Pantanal, the Upper Paraguay River Basin (BAP) and in areas with native vegetation.
